What Does $500k Get You in Sydney?

May 16th 2006 03:53
Moving down south to Sydney and its clear that $500k isn’t going to stretch nearly as far as in Brisbane. Its likely you’ll be settling for a semi or townhouse if you want a property easily accessible to the city centre.

In Newtown, $500k will buy you a pokey townhouse with great accessibility to the city, local nightlife and bohemian culture. The property is located in townhouse complex which can make for apartment like living. If you’ve got noisy or annoying neighbours – watch out. The house has two double bedrooms with built-ins, a gourmet kitchen and 1.5 bathrooms. There is also a private courtyard and double lock up parking. One potential downfall is that this property is directly under the Mascot Airport’s flight path.

Slightly further afield is a property in Rockdale. Again a double brick semi and it could certainly do with some modernization. The wallpaper and carpets scream retro. Nevertheless, the property features two bedrooms, neat kitchen and one bathroom. There are internal laundry facilities, storage and a double lock up garage at the rear of the property.

If you’re prepared for a longer commute to the city, a detached freestanding house can be purchased in Kogarah in the $500k range. The property is a double bedroom federation home. It is single storey with a rear parking area. There’s a separate lounge and dining area, renovated kitchen and outdoor entertainment area.

Clearly, properties in Sydney are among the more expensive on a national scale. Any property with easy access to the city centre is likely to be a semi, townhouse or single storey terrace to get within the $500k mark. Land area and livable spaces are definitely much smaller in the inner city locations. If you are prepared to extend your distance from the CBD larger properties requiring fewer renovations can be purchased for $500k. Again, nothing particularly exciting or modern can be purchased with this amount, but a modest double bedroom single storey house in a livable state can be expected.
