Sutherland is boarded by the Royal National Park, the beautiful Port Hacking River to the South and the Woronora River to the West. The suburb of Sutherland is the central hub of the Sutherland Shire. Here is where the Sutherland Shire Council Chambers, Sutherland Shire Public Library can be visited on Eaton Street. The Local Court, and NSW Police are neighbours on Flora Street. The NSW Fire Brigade and Electoral Offices are also located in Sutherland.

A large shopping village winds around the Old Princes Highway featuring a broad range of specialty shops and other conveniences with some cozy little restaurants and cafes.

Next to the pool is Waratah Park. It has 4 large sporting ovals and a cycling track around the perimeter of the fields.

Sutherland railway station between The Old Princes Highway and East Street, is the junction point of the Cronulla line which continues through Kirrawee, Gymea, Miranda, Caringbah, Woolooware and ends in Cronulla.
