Rozelle, NSW
February 3rd 2008 08:09
You've probably driven through Rozelle without even noticing... you've probably passed through it on your way to somewhere more interesting. Balmain, perhaps. Hunters Hill?
With escalating real estate prices, though, Rozelle is quickly growing to meet the needs of people hoping to live near the city, without the hassle and the street crime of the Inner East.
Originally named after the parrots in the area (Rose Hill Parrots -> Rosehill -> Rozelle), Rozelle became a suburb after inhabitants of Balmain East pushed out towards Rozelle Bay to use the fertile land for farming.
Now, there's a mental institution.
The only thing that's crazy about Rozelle, though, is how fast it's grown... Victoria Road has become a main throughway, but Darling St. has opened to a range of cafes, restaurants and shops. The Rozelle markets, held on the weekends, are a great place to find second-hand items, and Roberts street has a row of auto shops that specialize in fancy-pantsy European cars. What's the matter - Holden's not good enough feh yah?
It's a good area for young couples to rent or purchase a starter home... transport to the City is amazingly quick - you can get to the QVB in 13 minutes by bus. Plenty of fit, young, enthusiastic accountants ride their bikes or walk to the city, which gets their blood pumping for their day full of financial antics. Oh, those wild number crunchers!
