One of Melbourne's oldest industrial and working class inner suburbs, Richmond has more recently been transformed into one of the city's trendiest residential and retail quarters. Once, along with neighbouring Collingwood and Fitzroy, Richmond was known as a tough part of Melbourne, held back by dominating heavy industry. The Richmond of today is far more affluent, its narrow streets of single-fronted cottages and terrace houses having changed dramatically over the past 20 years.
