Richmond, VIC

December 7th 2006 06:13
One of Melbourne's oldest industrial and working class inner suburbs, Richmond has more recently been transformed into one of the city's trendiest residential and retail quarters. Once, along with neighbouring Collingwood and Fitzroy, Richmond was known as a tough part of Melbourne, held back by dominating heavy industry. The Richmond of today is far more affluent, its narrow streets of single-fronted cottages and terrace houses having changed dramatically over the past 20 years. It is now populated by many professionals and younger well-to-do families.

Diners enjoy a veritable feast of options when dining out. There are plenty of options for shopping or browsing through dozens of intriguing shops along Bridge Road, Church Street and Swan Street.

Trains to Melbourne's Northern suburbs via Jolimont pass through West and North Richmond. Similarly, major tram services operate along Victoria Street and Bridge Road, with government bus routes augmenting an excellent transport system. The public transport links that service Richmond are fantastic which gives the residents greater flexibility beyond relying on a personal means of transportation.
