Radical Apartment Block for New York
August 1st 2006 00:55
I just realized that I haven’t used the word ‘radical’ since my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle days. How retro.
Anyway, this new apartment block to be built in New York is truly cool looking.
The high rise is designed by Santiago Calatrava, a genius modern architect with a plethora of international structural marvels. These apartments are located at 80 South Street and is comprised of 12 45-foot glass cubes.
Each of the cubes forms four floors of residential space. There is a central stem that the cubes are built around. This stem facilitates the services, emergency stairs and elevators.
Among Calatrava's other recent works include the expansion of the Milwaukee Art Museum (2001), Sondica Airport, Bilbao (2000); James Joyce Bridge, Dublin (2003); the Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz, Canary Islands (2003); Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay, Redding, Calif. (2004). the Petach Tikvah Bridge, Tel Aviv; Quarto Ponte sul Grand Canale, Venice; and the Palacio de las Artes.
Calatrava has won a rediculous number of awards for his brilliant designs and structures. More information and images of his other works can be found at Santiago Calatrava.
