What $500 000 will buy you

When I was a kid, $500 000 was enough to buy you a massive house in the rich part of the city that I grew up in.
Oh, how things have changed.
In Sydney, you can't even get a cardboard box to breakdance on for a half-mil. Apartments are up at $500 000 and tiny, cramped houses in Paddington go for mil . See how I used the 'mil' and the ' ' to make it sound like I'm in the know? I'm in the know.
Sydney's pretty bad, but trendy cities in America face the same problem. Buying property in NYC and LA has always been ridiculous, but San Fran is joining the ranks.
For $500 000, you can buy this in San Francisco:
If you were to take that $500 000 out of the bank, pack it all in a duffel bag and fly to South Africa, you could buy this for the exact same amount of money:
I got this fine information from the excellent DivineCaroline website, which has a full article on what you can buy for the same amount of money in different parts of the world.
Why live in San Fran, when you can live in South Africa? In Africa, you get the immediate bonus of having zebras and lions on your property. They keep out unwanted guests, I've heard.
In the end, with the housing crisis, and the threat of recession, aren't you better off buying a medieval castle in the Ukraine, instead of a decent apartment in Manhattan?
