If you're coming to Sydney Uni and you're stuck for a place to live, King St. has a backpackers that's fairly cheap, considering the location.
Check out this Backpackers for $120/wk
It's in Newtown, which is one of the trendiest suburbs near Sydney Uni, with a great long street full of cafes and restaurants, several bars, and lots of stores selling overpriced Asian 'antiques' for you to put in your room.
Rental prices are going through the roof, and $120 is pretty damn good, though you'll have to survive in the backpackers. Who knows what that's like? Shared bathroom, dorms - it's like being in an American comedy from the 80s. All you need is a stuck up dean and a preppie fraternity to compete with.
The link also includes some pictures, one of all the guests posing in a common area. One of them could be you! Imagine the memories, the stories. Meeting people from all over the world, getting in hyjinks, knee-deep in soap opera dramas, getting really drunk and passing out in the common room, having your eyebrows shaved and your hand put in warm water. Fights over the bathroom and uncomfortable silences while eyeing what you think is pubic hair.

Uh oh - another post by the same backpackers suggest that single and double rooms go for $180. This is sound less and less like a good deal... maybe $180 is for a double room, and that is not a deal.
You'd best just come to Sydney and try to find a place yourself...!
