Bridgewater, SA

November 22nd 2006 00:33
South Australia’s Bridgewater is profiled in the “Better Know a Suburb” series. Bridgewater is located only 22 km from Adelaide via the South East Freeway, an attractive village which is noted for its exceptionally beautiful old watermill. The village of Bridgewater came into existence in 1840 when an inn was built at the fording point where bullock teams crossed Cock's Creek. It was originally known as Cock's Creek.

Bridgewater is an area with a village feel and is a pleasant retreat from the heat of Adelaide. It has a distinctly English feel to it with pleasant European gardens and plenty of deciduous trees along the creek. It is part of the Adelaide Hills Council, an area that is located to the east of metropolitan Adelaide.

The district holds special significance as a major environmental and recreational asset. The majority of Adelaide Hills Council lies within the Mt Lofty Ranges Watershed which supplies around 24 percent of metropolitan Adelaide's water supply. The area has a wide range of land uses including agriculture, residential, retail, industrial, conservation and tourism.

In recent years, Bridgewater has become increasingly urbanised due to better access to the Adelaide CBD via the South Eastern Freeway and also people's desire to enjoy the quality of life offered by a country location in close proximity to the city. This has spurred development in Bridgewater and surrounding townships.

Local industries include apple, pear and cherry growing, vineyards, mixed farming, quarries, nurseries, market gardening, grazing, forestry, horses and cattle.
