Ashfield, NSW

One of Sydney's western suburbs, Ashfield is a 30 minute drive from the city center and is accessible by train or bus.
What makes Ashfield special? It's a one-of-a-kind Australian suburb, with a massive Chinese population that has rendered the main street, Liverpool st., into a commercial district that looks as if it were cut out of a city in China, frozen, then shipped over here for good times.
It's a more sincere Chinatown than the official Chinatown, located in Haymarket, near Central Station. The big lions and the Chinese writing are for tourists coming to the Sydney CBD - in reality, there are few decent restaurants.
Ashfield, on the other hand, is a breath of inspiration. The large Shanghainese population has created a wealth of fantastic restaurants serving fabulous food at very reasonable prices. Here's a list of restaurants in Ashfield.
Additionally, green groceries are amazingly cheap in Ashfield... the large fruit-and-veg shop has good quality produce for unbeatable prices.
Parking is dead easy in Ashfield - there are few meters, and it's easy to park on Liverpool Road - though the street gets very crowded on Saturday afternoon.
Ashfield is a growing community... it's high-density, there's a lot of action, and it's a quick drive to the city, as well as a convenient train ride.
